In 2009, Marbella was the city chosen for the Davis Cup. This year, it will be held again, here in Marbella. The setting for this great event is of course the renowned Puente Romano Hotel Tennis Club, on Marbella's Golden Mile. The matches will take place this weekend and we are all expectant to finally see who is taking the famous international tennis trophy.
Davis Cup History
The tournament was conceived in 1899 by four members of the Harvard University tennis team who wished to challenge the British to a tennis competition. Once their respective lawn tennis associations agreed, one of the four Harvard players, Dwight F. Davis, designed a tournament format and ordered an appropriate sterling silver trophy, purchasing it from his own funds.
The first match, between the United States and Great Britain was held at the Longwood Cricket Club in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1900. The American team, of which Dwight Davis was a part, surprised the British by winning the first three matches. The following year the two countries did not compete but the US won the next match in 1902. By 1905 the tournament expanded to included Belgium, Austria, France and Australasia, a combined team from Australia and New Zealand that competed together until 1914.
The tournament was initially titled the International Lawn Tennis Challenge although it soon became known as the Davis Cup, after Dwight Davis’ trophy.
From 1950 to 1967, Australia dominated the competition, winning the Cup 15 times in 18 years. On the 100th anniversary of the tournament’s founding, 129 nations competed for the Davis Cup.

The magical festive season is here. There will be No snow, No freezing temperatures but plenty of sunshine and warm weather. This is Christmas in Marbella. The count down to this fun season has already begun with decorations, nativity scenes and city lights adorning our charasmatic streets and plazas of Marbella and San Pedro.
Marbella Christmas events have already begun with the Inauguration of Nativity Scene, Lights and Santas Grotto until the 8th January with the closing of the season, celebrating The Three Kings (Los Reyes) on the 5th. It is a magical and exciting time for children and adults alike with the cooler evenings bringing the family together. Time to bring out the board games, enjoy the chimney, put up the Christmas tree and enjoy an over indulgence of wondeful Christmas food and warm snuggly moments... mmmm it is all positively delightful. Here in Marbella we can also enjoy great weather which invites you for a different, more outdoor Christmas experience but with all the traditions and trimmings of Christmas. Charity Xmas fairs and bazaars, face painting, games, lots of beautiful artesanal gifts and ideas for presents. Especially we recommend the charming La Virginia's Christmas Market on Sunday the 14th of December from 11 am until 6 pm. It is a jolly, family friendly kind of Christmas with lots to do and enjoy.
Have a wonderful festive season and a Happy Christmas,
The Dolan Team
